An Almost Perfect Storm

An almost Perfect Storm stuck the Delivery Department last week! The delivery staff was down by three due to illness, vacation and an open position. After some last minute re-shuffling which included recruiting a volunteer, Alan, from the administrative staff, all the routes were covered. Since our Delivery Manager, Larry, was on vacation in the wilds, this re-sorting of responsibilities fell to Don his assistant, who gallantly took on the task.

Once all the routes were covered, we were still short a staff person to sort the ILDS, the materials that come in through the statewide delivery system. This presented to me an opportunity to get out from behind my desk and learn a new skill. It was somewhat heavy and dusty work – some of those books weight a ton! I was grateful that CD’s and DVD’s now make up a majority of library materials.

It felt good to do some physical work and put some order to the large container of bagged books. There was  a sense of completion when the job was done that I don’t always have in my usual administrative tasks. I knew that the materials were on there way to library users throughout our system, many of whom are eagerly awaiting a desired DVD or good read.
