Our holiday gift

As a number of our members have celebrated the season, NSLS staff collected food and money for those in need. Our contribution went to the Wheeling Township Food Pantry. Our staff that delivered to the Township commented on the empty spaces on the stocking shelves. Needless to say, we were ever more grateful as we enjoyed our savory holiday lunch here together. Best wishes for the new year from your friends at NSLS.NSLS Food Pantry contribution

Snow day and holiday schedule.

NSLS is closed today due to the inclement weather. With the snow situation, I was up early this morning–coffee by my side–to finish up our e-newsletter and send it out as early as possible to help advise our members of NSLS being closed.

With the holidays fast approaching, here’s a quick rundown of our schedules at NSLS, as it appeared in the e-news:

The NSLS administrative office in Wheeling will be closed Wednesday – Friday, December 24 – 26, as well as December 31 – January 1. During the closings, there will only be van delivery one day, Friday, December 26.

Also note that the next edition of the e-news will publish on Friday, January 2.

Stay safe out there and have a happy holiday season.

Getting to know you.

From October through April things are pretty hectic at the system.  It always seems that we have a string of special events that we are either gearing up for or are producing. One of these special events is the annual NSLS Awards  and then the banquet we have in March.  This year in addition to all of my usual activities as Public Library Liaison, I have temporarily assumed the role of School and Youth Services Liaison. One of the things that this has meant is encouraging School people to nominate individuals for various awards. This has also caused me to follow the awards a little more closely this year then I have for the past two years.

As I look over the awards, I have come to realize there are so many wonderful people working at and supporting all of our various types of libraries. You are awesome. I wish we could do more things across library types and concentrate on what we have in common. I think it would make meetings much more interesting and enriching for all participants.

Of course, I look forward to seeing everyone at NSLS for various classes and networking groups. I hope many more of you attend our Legislative Breakfast, Awards Banquet, and Advocacy Day in Springfield. But, I also hope that as I attend new networking groups and get to know more of you, I can introduce more of you to each other and that we can get some great “cross pollenation” of ideas and experiences going.

I would like to challenge you all to read the nominations and discover some very interesting people. Then take it one step further and drop an e-mail introducing yourself to one of the nominees that intrigued you.  You can congratulate them and ask them how they accomplished what they have done. It is a step in looking beyond your own library and getting new ideas and approaches to your work. Join me in making 2009 a year of new experiences and meeting new colleagues.

Sales call turns into “love my Ela Area PL” chat

A printer rep was in the area and asked to stop by and make my acquaintance.  I had nothing to bid on right now, so our discussion was brief. He had picked up some of our brochures at his home town library – Ela Area Public Library District. He marveled that the parking lot always seems to be filled up. He thought it might be double the capacity of the old library lot, which was also filled.  He wondered if it is a case of “you build it, and they will come?”  He knows the library was well-used before, but imagined use grew with the new, attractive, bigger space.  He uses Ela’s computers a great deal as he can’t get any work done at home (three kids).  His family has joined the waves that are saving dollars by checking out videos from the library instead of Blockbuster. And yes, they check out books all the time, too. Good going, Ela!
