Behind the Scenes @ NSLS

Peggy Sharp

If you were not one of the approximately 300 people visiting NSLS over the last 3 days, you might not be aware of what goes on behind the scenes during the Peggy Sharp Programs.  Peggy has been coming to NSLS for years doing educational programs for librarians and teachers.  It is our most popular program.  But, as you can imagine, quite a bit goes into hosting these programs.  In some way or another, everyone on the NSLS staff is involved.  In preparation, we needed to take registration, create handouts, order lunches, and do room set-up.  Over the last 3 days, we also had to deal with some weather issues.

Also, imagine 100 people heading out of the auditorium at noon, hungry, looking for food, and some place to eat.  It takes a bit of organization to get everyone their lunch, direct them to a room, get cleaned up, and back to the program in an hour.

I’m very proud of my colleagues.  They truly had the events of the last 3 days running like clockwork.  But, a lot went into making that happen.  It’s very fulfilling to know that 300 librarians and teachers left here this week with a positive experience and skills that will assist them in their very important work.

Library “bull market” in the news

The American Library Association has done a bang-up job promoting the surge in library usage during the economic downturn. The message has been EVERYWHERE. Our libraries have also been effective promoting this locally. It was great to see Katie Couric close out the year on CBS News with commentary on libraries. It was a good year for her, too! Take a look (sorry for the brief commercial at the top).
