July 16, 2009 Coming soon to NSLS: ALA SuperstarsNSLS staff came back from ALA conference with a long list of speakers we’d like to bring to NSLS for professional development classes. If you have any suggestions, PD Manager Donna Tieberg (dtieberg@nsls.info) would love to hear from you. I had the pleasure of spending some quality ALA shuttle bus time with Kathy Dempsey. Kathy is editor of Marketing Library Services, a highly regarded resource for libraries of all types. You can also spend some quality time with Kathy at NSLS on October 1. Registration is open for her two half-day programs: Building Community Partnerships: 25+ Ideas, and Marketing to Make Websites Findable. And then there is Kathy’s fab new book, The Accidental Library Marketer. You can hear about it on her recent Longshots podcast. Here we are at her book-signing at ALA.

NSLS is proud to announce that Building & Delivery Assistant Don Johnson has been appointed to serve as a member of the Wheeling Plan Commission. The Commission was created to prepare a comprehensive Village plan for the direction and control of the growth and development of Wheeling. That is a huge responsibility, resting on the capable shoulders of citizens that serve on a volunteer basis. Don has always been active as a volunteer during his 21 years as a Wheeling resident. His volunteer activities have included the PTO, Cub and Boy Scouts, Citizens’ Police Academy, Wheeling Citizens’ Patrol, C.A.R.E., and of course, the Indian Trails Public Library. If Don’s generous portfolio has inspired you to venture into the world of volunteerism, but you don’t know where to start, visit President Obama’s website for United We Serve. Don is pictured here signing his oath of office presented by Village Clerk Elaine Simpson.
